Rockport — Rockport Automotive paired with One Community Many Voices to donate a vehicle in like-new condition to a local man who was in need of a new car.

Jan Abendroth, owner of Rockport Automotive, met Sergio Heese and his son Mason at the start of August.

“FEDCAP had sent him to me for us to evaluate his vehicle for repairs,” said Abendroth. “Unfortunately, the cost of repairing the vehicle far outweighed the value of the vehicle.”

Abendroth and all her employees were impressed and touched by Heese and his relationship with his son. “It touched my heart,” said Abendroth.

Heese is a full-time single parent who suffered many losses due to COVID-19. First childcare, then his job and then his housing.

Abendroth and her staff discussed the situation Heese was in, and decided they wanted to help.

A car had recently been donated to the business by long-time customers who wanted to remain anonymous. “They asked that I do something good with it,” said Abendroth.

The car was a red 1996 Subaru. Being unsure what they should do with the vehicle, Abendroth and her crew fixed it up and waited for the right opportunity.

Abendroth said it didn’t take long for all the staff to decide donating the vehicle to Heese was that opportunity.

The company has paired with One Community Many Voices several times. OCMV is a nonprofit organization that asks recipients to perform volunteer acts to pay back the charity given to them.

“We are honored to be able to donate this car to Sergio Hesse through One Community Many Voices,” said Abendroth.

Since losing his housing, Heese has been working with the Knox County Homeless Coalition. Abendroth happily reported that Heese is now in an apartment and has a safe vehicle to “keep this positive momentum moving forward.”

On Aug. 26, Abendroth and her entire staff were present to pass the vehicle to Heese.

Ryan Moody from Knox County Homeless Coalition and Tammy Rolfe from One Community Many Voices were also present.

Heese read a statement thanking Rockport Automotive, Knox County Homeless Coalition and One Community Many Voices for their help. It was an emotional moment, and both Heese and Abendroth had tears in their eyes as they embraced.

"We are so happy to work with OCMV," said Abendroth. "It just pairs so well with what we are trying to do here at Rockport Auto."
