Authorities found a body in a Massachusetts river Monday they believe is a motorcycle driver who was launched over a bridge into the body of water over the weekend, according to police.

The body washed up on the shore of the Taunton River about 1.5 miles from the area that was searched by the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team on Monday, officials said.

It is believed, although not yet confirmed, the body is that of the motorcyclist who was ejected off a ramp on the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Fall River early Sunday, according to a statement from Massachusetts State Police.

“The body was found in the area of Riverview Drive,” the statement said. “The investigation is ongoing.”

State police troopers responded to a call shortly before 12:30 a.m. Sunday about a Kawasaki motorcycle lying in the middle of the ramp on the bridge on Route 6 eastbound to Route 79 southbound, authorities said.

The motorcyclist, identified only as a 35-year-old Fall River man, was likely thrown over an embankment due to the impact of the crash and fell into the water below, according to officials.

Members of the state police dive team and marine unit discovered articles of clothing Sunday but did not find the driver, law enforcement said. The U.S. Coast Guard and Somerset police also helped with the search.

After being suspended Sunday, the search started again Monday morning, with the state police underwater recovery team using side-scan sonar, equipment that detects objects or anomalies on the seabed, according to authorities.
