New Honda Patent Illustrates a Motorcycle- Based Drone - Interesting Engineering

culamoto.blogspot.com

Honda is known for its innovation, engineering some pretty awesome robots, and even swappable electric batteries. Now. it seems it has new plans for a motorcycle drone according to a novel patent the firm has filed.

The illustrations point to a drone that mounts on the back of a motorcycle and the patent indicates that the drone would be released from the bike and return to it when it needs to recharge. What remains unclear is what the drone will be used for.

Today, drones can be used for everything from filmmaking to surveillance, although it would be farfetched to assume Honda would be targeting military applications with this one

The patent indicates that the drone would be able to fly and return to the bike on its own without requiring that the driver cease riding in order to control the drone. This is a pretty cool feature we must say, and we can see it being used for taking images and filmmaking.

Another potential application we can imagine is for the drone to ride ahead and convey back to the driver which routes are most congested. The driver could then choose streets with less traffic.

However, this would require the driver to be wearing a special helmet that can receive messages from the drone and no such patent was filed so far. In addition, it's highly unlikely that Honda patented a drone just for traffic congestion when there are apps that can do the same thing.

For now, it remains a mystery what the drone will be used for but we have to marvel at Honda's ingenuity in creating the canopy from which the drone is released. If you look at the illustrations you will understand what we mean.

Will we be seeing this motorcycle drone in action any time soon?
