A 66-year-old woman died in a weekend motorcycle crash on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
A National Park Service news release said that at 2:16 p.m. July 24, Blue Ridge Parkway rangers and local fire and rescue responded to a serious motorcycle crash near Milepost 325 on the parkway.
This is about 60 miles north of Asheville, and 30 miles north of Mount Mitchell State Park, in McDowell County.
At the scene, first responders found the operator of one motorcycle injured. The passenger on a nearby motorcycle, Loretta Stevenson, 66, of Glen St. Mary, Florida, was found dead, according to the news release.
The operator of the crashed motorcycle was Edward Stevenson, 65, also of Glen St. Mary. Hes was transported to Mission Hospital in Asheville for evaluation.

The parkway in this area was closed for about two hours. The investigation is ongoing.
The parkway runs 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia south the Cherokee, passing directly through Asheville. It is the second most visited unit in the National Park Service, with 15 million visitors in 2019.

This is the eighth fatality on the parkway this year, according to spokeswoman Caitlin Worth.
There were 17 fatalities on the parkway in 2019, including those resulting from medical incidents, falls, suicides and motor vehicle accidents.
