SMP Automotive Systems Alabama plans to add a third facility to its Tuscaloosa County operations.

“Tuscaloosa County is proud to be the home to now three SMP facilities,” said Mark Crews, the chairman of the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority. “This project enhances the company’s footprint in our community while enhancing job opportunities and advancements for our citizens.”

The international automotive supplier, a subsidiary of Samvardhana Motherson Group, produces exterior and interior components for vehicles manufactured at the Mercedes‐Benz U.S. International plant in Vance, along with providing logistics and other services.  More than 1,900 people now work at the company’s two Tuscaloosa County plants.

SMP's third facility will be in the Cedar Cove Technology Park, adjacent to the company's first plant Tuscaloosa County plant. The company's second plant is at the Brookwood Parkway.

The new facility will have about 112 employees, including at least four new hires. Other positions are expected to be filled by workers who will transfer from the first plant.

Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority on March 30 approved a tax abatement package for SMP's new facility.

According to a news release, SMP will receive an abatement of the non‐educational sales and use taxes for purchases of equipment and building materials during the construction phase of the project. SMP  will invest $4.195 million in equipment and building materials.

TCIDA officials say the company will be eligible for tax abatements in an estimated amount of $263,958. During the first 10 years of operations, the project is estimated to contribute almost $200,000 in tax revenue in non‐abated taxes, including education taxes, from initial purchases alone.

In addition, TCIDA estimates the project will contribute more than $800,000 over the next 20 years in certain taxes generated from the company and direct employee spending, identified through TCIDA’s standard evaluation process.

“SMP and the Motherson Group’s continued investment in our community echoes the partnership that was established in 2015 with the company’s first investment,” said Danielle Winningham, TCIDA executive director. “As our region’s automotive sector grows and advances, TCIDA and our many partners continue to work together to support the success of MBUSI and our automotive suppliers, while creating new, good- paying jobs for our community.”
