LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Lancaster Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit is investigating Wednesday’s fatal crash on Broadway at Cemetery Road involving a Lancaster Central School District bus.
Police tell News 4 David Konsek, 60, of Depew was struck and killed by the school bus while he was operating a motorcycle on Broadway.
“Roads were dry at the time of the collision,” said Lt. Shaun Dimino. It was happened at about 6:47pm on Wednesday. A Lancaster School bus was returning from an athletic event but had no students on at the time. Lancaster Police say the bus driver was heading east on Broadway and as he turned left onto Cemetery Road, he turned into the path of an oncoming motorcycle which was heading toward the village of Lancaster on Broadway.
The motorcyclist, 60 year old David Konsek of Depew was pinned under the bus and pronounced dead at the scene.
“It is very early in the investigation. At this point there does appear to be some culpability on the driver of the bus,” according to Lt. Dimino, who adds that the school bus driver voluntarily submitted to a blood test.
Lt. Dimino says the toxicology results should take about a month. “So at this time, we do not believe there was any type of distraction, we don’t believe the driver was on any sort of device at the time of the accident. As far as alcohol or use of a drug, there’s no suspicion of any type illegal activity at this point.”
The school bus driver was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation, according to police.
