State transportation officials are stressing the importance of motorcycle safety after the deadliest year on record for Colorado motorcyclists.

Motorcycle Safety Month kicks off in May, coinciding  with the state’s riding season. With 137 motorcyclists killed in 2020, bike safety is more important than ever. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, there were 103 motorcyclist deaths on the roads in 2019, which means fatalities increased 33% this past year.

To successfully execute the campaign, CDOT looked into research and data to discover the factors surrounding motorcycle casualties. During a news conference, many speakers discussed how wearing a helmet is one of the most important factors of surviving a crash. CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew said helmets are the main subject of this safety campaign.

“Wear a helmet, no excuses,” Lew said. “Every ride, every time.”

According to CDOT, 334 motorcyclists were killed between 2015-2017, and 83 of those lives could have been saved if riders wore their helmets. In 2020, six motorcyclists who weren’t wearing helmets died in fatal crashes on Weld County roads, compared to three who were helmeted, according to data from the Weld County Coroner’s Office.

Colorado State Patrol offers Motorcycle Operator Safety Training to learn about motorcycle safety and skills. In the news conference, CSP Chief Matthew Packard shared his thoughts on the importance of training and learning the skills it takes to ride a motorcycle.

“Don’t be content with just passing the training required for the issuance of your license, add to your knowledge and skills for advanced mastery of your motorcycle,” Packard said in the release. “Whether this is your first season or your fifteenth, you will enjoy the ride more as a safer, more confident rider.”

Along with wearing helmets and professional training, CDOT encourages riders to wear proper gear, get a license endorsement, follow traffic laws and ride sober.

For non-motorcyclists, CDOT urges all other vehicles on the road to take precautions like checking blind spots, being alert at intersections and remaining a safe distance away when driving behind a motorcycle.

“Safety starts with you,” Packard said. “Your safety, as you are traveling, is your first responsibility.”
