VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI — A 65-year-old Three Rivers man who died as the result of a single-vehicle motorcycle crash late Sunday night has been identified by sheriff’s deputies.

Therman Preston was found unresponsive, laying in a driveway Monday morning in the 91000 block of M-40 in Porter Township, according to a news release from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies were called to the scene at 7:36 a.m. Sept. 28.

After talking with homeowners in the area, it is believed the crash occurred at around 11:40 p.m. the night before, the release states.

Preston, who was riding a 1999 Harley Davidson, appeared to have been southbound on M-40 when he ran off the road, struck a metal "T" post, lost control and collided with a tree, deputies said.

The Three Rivers man was not wearing a helmet when he was found and no helmet was located among the accident, debris, the release states. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

It is not clear what caused Preston to deviate from the roadway and the case remains under investigation, the release states.

During the investigation deputies contacted several homeowners in the area that advised they heard a loud sound around 11:40 p.m. Sunday night and inspected outside for the cause of the sound. Due to the lack of light and an active rain storm, visibility was low and the crash scene was not found until the following morning, the release states.
